Why do scars form?
Scars can occur due a variety of circumstances including accidents, skin conditions like acne, surgical scarring, or because of certain diseases.
When recovering from an injury or skin condition, your skin cells produce collagen at a quicker rate than your body’s natural collagen production to repair the wound. This results in a scar, which is an area of skin that is typically thicker and not as flexible as the rest of your skin.
The appearance of scars varies, depending on what caused them, how your body heals as a result, your natural skin tone, and the location on the body. Scars may be flat, raised (also called a keloid scar), or depressed. They can vary in size, texture, and colour.
Treating Scars
Different types of scars require different treatments. Your age, natural skin tone, and how long you have had your scar will also affect the type of treatment to possibly improve it. We determine what type of scar you have, if it is likely to fade with time, when to treat it for best results, and which specific treatment is recommended.
